On the 10th day of "Ship-mas," OpenAI introduced a new feature that allows users to call ChatGPT for up to 15 minutes for free using 1-800-CHATGPT in the US, and internationally via WhatsApp at 1-800-242-8478. This feature was launched just a few weeks ago, according to Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s chief product officer, during a livestream. The 15-minute limit applies per phone number each month, meaning users could utilize additional Google Voice numbers if they wish to extend their access.
This service leverages OpenAI’s Realtime API, while the WhatsApp functionality is powered by GPT-4o mini via integration with the WhatsApp API.
OpenAI views this offering as a crucial gateway for newcomers to explore AI through a more simplified and accessible version of ChatGPT, particularly through familiar communication channels like phone and WhatsApp. However, existing users seeking advanced features, higher usage limits, and personalized experiences are encouraged to continue using the web-based version of ChatGPT.
Interestingly, a similar initiative was launched by Google in 2007 with GOOG-411, a free directory assistance service by voice, which was discontinued in 2010. Google later explained that the initiative was aimed at gathering speech samples to enhance its speech recognition technology. OpenAI has clarified that they will not be using these calls to train large language models.
This development represents a new step in expanding access to AI tools, making ChatGPT more accessible and convenient for users.
